Founded in Perugia in 1975, L’Estate di San Martino is a band who, as many others in the Italian Prog scene, only recently had the opportunity to release some records and play live with a certain regularity. The group is now celebrating their 40th anniversary, in a wise way, by rearranging their last album “Talsete di Marsantino” (a peculiar anagram of the band’s name).

“ESM#40” is a totally original and ‘back-from-the-scratch’ reinterpretation: an acoustic album, enhanced by a series of wind instruments sections (flute, saxophone, bagpipes) that add a slight jazz sound. Here, we have also numerous important collaborations, the most important being the one with jazz saxophonist Francesco Santucci, from the RAI Modern Orchestra; other musicians involved are Goffredo Degli Espositi (from Micrologus), Conny Rausch, Alessandro Deledda and Peppe Stefanelli.

The album absolute peak is reached towards the end, thanks to a very special guest, that same Francesco Di Giacomo (Banco del Mutuo Soccorso) who already sung in “Talsete di Marsantino”; one last precious legacy, before his sudden passing in February 2014.

There’s just the footprint of the ‘original’ Talsete here, while all the rest is still to be discovered!

Fondata nel 1975 a Perugia, L’Estate di San Martino è una formazione che solo negli ultimi anni, al pari di molte altri gruppi del prog italiano, ha avuto la possibilità di pubblicare degli album e di suonare dal vivo con un certa regolarità. La band celebra oggi il quarantesimo anniversario, e lo fa in maniera saggia, andando a rivisitare il proprio ultimo lavoro “Talsete di Marsantino” (curioso anagramma del nome del gruppo).

“ESM#40” è una rilettura totalmente originale e con partiture riscritte da zero; un disco acustico, impreziosito da numerosi interventi di strumenti a fiato (flauto, sassofono, cornamusa) che contribuiscono a donargli delle venature jazz inedite. L’album vanta collaborazioni importantissime: la più illuminante e significativa è stata quella con il jazzista Francesco Santucci, primo sax dell’Orchestra Moderna della Rai; Affiancano il gruppo Goffredo degli Esposti (già nei Micrologus), Conny Rausch, Alessandro Deledda e Peppe Stefanelli.

L’apice del disco lo si raggiunge sul finale, grazie a un ospite d’eccezione, quel Francesco Di Giacomo (Banco del Mutuo Soccorso) che già cantò nel precedente “Talsete”; un prezioso ultimo lascito prima della sua scomparsa prematura avvenuta nel febbraio 2014.

Del Talsete ‘originario’ resta l’impronta, il resto è tutto da scoprire!
